Wake as the sun rises and the dawn chorus begins. Check out sunrise from east facing loft window above bed and consider getting up. Half an hour later, drag myself from the warm cocoon and head downstairs. Set up my camping stove and boil some water for tea. Quickly rustle up newspaper and the last of my kindling to light the fire while I wait. Wrap up in my dressing gown and ugg boots while the fire gathers warmth, settle at my computer desk with a cuppa and some banana bread. Cram some study/work in before the day gets started.
Have a bathroom break, realise the pee bucket of the toilet is full and needs emptying. Head outside to the garden in dressing gown and uggs to dilute pee with water caught from the overflow of my rain water tank. Pour diluted pee around the garden. Walk back to house reflecting on the next blog post: ‘Top reasons not to empty pee bucket in ugg boots’. Realise there’s pretty much only one reason and it’s a pretty obvious one at that.
Top up some coir peat in the poo bucket, to soak up extra moisture and keep the smell at bay. Take a load of washing down to the big house and put it on. Back at the tiny, the sun breaks through the clouds and hits my double doors and solar panels, landing square on my couch. Winter sun will not be resisted, I am not fool enough to try. Strip off the dressing gown and uggs for a snooze on the couch, doze in blissful warmth.
The fire is cranking and the tummy is grumbling. Set up a pot to boil on the stove for lunch and head back outside for more firewood and to hang washing. Split extra wood for kindling, set reminder to collect old newspapers from the office next week for fire lighting.
As the soup cooks on top of the fire, heat another pot of water for last night’s dishes to conserve gas from hot water. Chop up the last of the vegetables from my local organic veggie box to roast for dinner tomorrow while the oven is hot. Plug phone and laptop in to charge while the sun is out – short days have meant less power charging my batteries. Check data usage on phone, only internet access in the tiny is from hot-spotting my phone. Scour ebay for twenty minutes, looking for a second rainwater tank and another compost bin. Get distracted and use up remaining data on phone trawling through Facebook.
Aunty duties call: walk ten minutes up the road and pick up nephew from kinder. Meet the older two kids back home as they’ve walked home from school. Catch up on the school day over afternoon tea. Spend twenty minutes reading up on fruit trees and ‘no-dig’ gardening techniques. Inspired! Head out to the garden and spend an hour digging with no visible impact. Less inspired. Hunt through unorganised storage boxes for last year’s collection of veggie seeds, magically manage to somehow locate it. Set seeds up in moist plastic container on windowsill to germinate.
Practice trumpet for ten minutes, face may fall off. More practice required.
Leftovers from lunch for dinner, heated in the oven. Check power levels, keep the electricity use to a minimum, two lights switched on is plenty. Wash a second round of dishes and tidy the house ready for visitors tomorrow – tuck clothes away, dishes back in their place and a quick sweep of the floor. Done! Flop on the couch back in the dressing gown with another cuppa in front of the fire. Read a few chapters of a book. Crawl up into the loft and open all the windows – heat certainly rises. Check out the stars and the rising moon from bed and snuggle under my blankets in the cool evening breeze.
